VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Red Paddle Co, the world’s most popular inflatable stand up paddle board brand, is giving consumers across North America the opportunity to put its boards to the test during the 2017 Summer Demo Tour. Paddlers can also try their hands at testing out the tour’s co-sponsor FUSION’s STEREOACTIVE. The 42-stop tour will kick off on May 12th, 2017 in Seattle, WA.
Red Paddle Co’s team will travel to tour stops across North America to encourage local community members, beginner paddlers, and seasoned experts, to get out on the water and sample boards. Red Paddle Co will provide a wide range of boards for people to try at each stop, in an effort to connect consumers and future paddlers with their local dealers and to create an unforgettable paddling experience.
“We know that spending time on Red Paddle Co boards in the water is the single best tactic in influencing consumer purchasing decisions,” said Andrew Meakin, North American Marketing Manager “Through this tour, we’ll give customers the opportunity to appreciate the high quality, ease of use and packability of our inflatable boards in the field, just as they would if they owned a Red Paddle Co board.”
Each event is free to the public, and will feature a wide range of Red Paddle Co boards, including beginner boards, yoga boards, touring boards and racing boards. The Demo Events will also feature the 22-foot-long, four-person, Red Dragon Race Board. Attendees will be encouraged to round up three friends and to take the Red Dragon Race Board out for a spin. In addition, anyone that signs up for their local demo tour stop will automatically be entered into a contest to win an all expenses paid trip to the Dragon World Series Championship in Barbados from Oct. 28-30, 2017.

Interview by Rebecca Parsons / SUP the Mag
Paddlefish Sports, located in stunning Whitefish Montana, is a little shop with big stoke. Despite being far from the ocean, this landlocked state is a paddling paradise home to breathtaking lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, riddled with paddling opportunities for all skill-levels. The outdoor adventure company offers rentals, lessons and clinics to give paddlers the base they need before setting off on their own adventure. Owners Sonny and Kim Schierl are well versed in the local area and they’re more than willing to share their insight into the paddling playground with visitors. Here, Kim fills us in about the types of lessons Paddlefish offers, its fleet of boards and her recommendations for the best places to paddle in the area.
Tell us about the history of the shop.
Paddlefish Sports is Whitefish’s original standup paddle board pro shop & Northwest Montana’s only SUP-specific shop. Starting with a six-board fleet in April 2012, we’ve grown to have around forty boards in our rental fleet. It’s been very fulfilling to collaborate with several local businesses to enable them to offer paddleboards for rent as well. We enjoy opportunities to create adventures, assist in setting and meeting goals, and encourage experiences that someone may not have.
What makes Whitefish an ideal place for SUP?
We are rich in water resources here—there’s an abundance of lakes, reservoirs and rivers less than an hour’s drive from town. Beautiful, crystal clear water and stellar scenery in every direction. The rivers range from mild to wild and the lakes from quite small to the epic Flathead Lake and iconic Lake McDonald.
Tell us about some of the locations you frequent?
There are several good maps for the local waterways available at local fly shops and rafting places. One of our go-to guidebooks is the Flathead National Forest Three Forks of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River Float Guide from the USDA Forest Service. We suggest picking up a copy of one of these excellent guides for yourself and start planning your adventure!
What does your client base look like?
Our customer base is about 80 percent beginners & tourists, and 20 percent experienced regulars/locals. More than 2.5 million people visit Glacier National Park each year and many of them will also come to Whitefish, as it’s less than 30 miles away.
What kinds of lessons/tours do you offer?
We offer ACA-, WPA- and PaddleFit-certified SUP instruction on an individual or group basis, Yoga On Board and Pilates On Board sessions. Also watch for SUP fitness workouts, races and fun casual group paddles. We also host clinics, such as a whitewater skills clinic with Brittany Parker & Natali Zollinger of RVR2RVR. For the future, we are considering hosting an expedition-focused clinic and also looking at a SUP-yoga based clinic. We’ve also been known to occasionally head out for full moon paddles.
Are you open year-round?
The rental shop is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. In the off season, we still paddle as much as possible, even though it’s winter. Fall here is especially beautiful and there’s very little tourist traffic to contend with; it’s like you’ve got Glacier Park all to yourself.
What kind of boards do you sell?
We sell Fanatic, Glide, Riviera, BOGA, Rogue, YOLO, & Red Paddle Company boards. We sell QuickBlade Paddles and also carry NRS & ION products.
What has been the most rewarding part about running the shop?
The smiles! Having a positive impact on people and leaving them with a good first impression of the sport so that they look forward to doing it again and again!
And the sense of community. We have met and become friends with some wonderful people through the sport of SUP. We’re grateful for those connections, and really can’t imagine life any other way.

100 roof-mounted solar panels to produce 100% of electrical needs.
Williamsport, Md. (Apr. 20, 2017) - Wetsuit Wearhouse, the largest wetsuit specialty shop in the world, has completed the rooftop solar array at their headquarters in Williamsport, Maryland. With several years of planning and energy efficiency projects, the company has reached their goal of energy self-sufficiency.
“Being environmentally conscious has always been part of our mission,” said Chris Moleskie, Founder, President & CEO of Wetsuit . “As a distribution center, all cardboard is reused or recycled, plastic hangers are bundled and taken by the tractor trailer load for recycling, and we even found a company that dismantles and recycles k-cups. Anything we can do to minimize the impact on landfills.” He also said each employee has a recycling receptacle at their desk.
The solar array at Wetsuit Wearhouse was another stride in their environmentally-friendly workplace. After thinking about the big picture, studying their electrical consumption, and discussing tax incentives, Millennium 3 Energy of Hagerstown, Maryland was selected to install the panels. “I’ve always admired the forward thinking mentality of Chris and the Wetsuit Wearhouse team, always making energy efficiency a priority,” said Phil Kelly, owner of Millennium 3 Energy. “The array we installed consists of 100 panels that produce approximately 36,095 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, which will provide all their kilowatt hours.” Mr. Kelly noted that a number of businesses in the area are enjoying the benefits of getting their power from the sun.
“Our solar project was made possible by generous tax incentives from the state and federal government,” Mr. Moleskie explained. “We were one of three recipients in Washington County, Maryland to receive the USDA REAP Grant, with the help of our solar contractor, Millennium 3 Energy.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Renewable Energy for America Program (REAP) provides grants to agricultural operations and small businesses in rural areas for renewable energy projects. In 2015, the USDA allocated $63 million to alternative-energy projects, including solar, wind, and hydropower.
In addition to the solar array and their recycling program, Wetsuit Wearhouse has upgraded to motion-sensed LED lighting to reduce power consumption, which cut their electricity consumption by one-third, and replaced the HVAC boiler with high efficiency heat pumps.

Heart and Soul: The Story Behind Downunder
Hi, I’m Kim Hawkins, owner of Downunder Kayaks, SUP’s, and Surf Shop…
. . . a business dedicated to fun on the water for people of all ages, abilities and walks of life.
Raised in New Zealand, I LOVE the water, being creative and having a good time. When my kids were young teens, I got the opportunity to take over a small boutique with a few kayaks in Rowayton, CT, called Below Deck. It’s grown to two stores, one year round in the neighboring town of Westport. We laugh that these surf shops are successful in an area with no surf! Yet they are, and I think the secret is the passion – the love for being outdoors, the ‘surfer’ mindset and lifestyle. The experience you get when you visit Downunder is laid back, easy going, no worries.
In season, we offer SUP and kayak rentals, instruction, guided tours, kids camps, birthday parties, corporate outings, clambakes, SUP yoga, meditation, Sup with your Pup classes, and fitness programs. We sponsor the annual Stand Up For Veterans Charity Event and co-sponsor the annual Soundsurfer Waterman’s Challenge. We host certification courses such as PaddleFit and ASI. We are greatly involved with the community, and have a strong passion for veterans and first responders, offering them a discounted rate on all services. We cater to several off-site venues for private events, as well.
Both locations also have a boutique with clothing and apparel, water toys, footwear, jewelry, and accessories, boogie boards, and skim boards. Our Westport location carries hard goods that include paddle boards, kayaks, surfboards, wetsuits, and all the gear that goes with them.
My kids and husband have all been involved in the business over the years. For me it’s all about family and friends, and empowering them through on-water activities – and in true ‘kiwi’ fashion, everyone is considered family :)
Both of Downunder’s locations are on flat-water rivers that lead out to the protected Long Island Sound – gorgeous tidal waterways, estuaries, islands – the area is truly magical. Patrons can be as daring as they want – learn tricks, try yoga, take a fitness class, train to race. Or simply relax and paddle leisurely, take a tour, meditate.
The Downunder Mission Is To Have a Good Time
It’s all about enjoying your experience on the water and feeling good about yourself. We provide the tools, make sure you’re safe and prepared. We make it easy so that you can be successful. Kids from 3yrs to 80+ are totally capable and welcome. Downunder promises that a visit will enrich, enliven, refresh, and rejuvenate. You’ll feel like you’re on vacation and will want to come back for more.
Downunder is committed to the environment and its caretakers and to a way of life that reflects our passions and beliefs, our concerns and convictions. We want to make the water accessible for everyone, particularly those with disabilities or special needs. We are here to make a difference.

The process of coaching gives you a window into how people operate. How they respond to feedback, handle fatigue, disappointment and success. When you combine that process with a 7 day retreat of 16 hour days, you learn more about someone in that week than you normally do in years of friendship.
I met Norm Hann during one of those weeks.
What I learned made me want to share his story. Please do yourself a favor and listen to Norm’s journey. I promise it’s a story worth hearing.

While it’s not an exact guarantee, the brand new line of neoprene-free (and potential hypoallergenic wetsuit) Yulex wetsuits from Patagonia may prevent a neoprene allergy reaction.
Hub Hubbard, Patagonia’s Wetsuit Product Manager and the mind behind the Yulex line, said, “Some people are allergic to Thiuram, which is not present in our rubber. However that’s not to say they aren’t allergic to some other ingredients, like foaming agents or lamination glues. We’ve had some people be successful with the yulex rubber and some have still had reactions.”
So there’s some hope for those suffering from a neoprene allergy. If you tend to experience a wetsuit allergy or maybe you’re not sure if you will, contact Wetsuit Wearhouse and we’ll send you a Yulex koozie that you can wear around your arm or leg to test for a reaction (we’ll apply a $5 shipping fee to a future order for the koozie). That way, before committing to buying a wetsuit, you can see if Yulex causes a neoprene allergy or not.
Interested? Call Wetsuit Wearhouse at (866-906-7848) or email (email@example.com) and we’ll be happy to help ease any neoprene allergy woes!
